What is Hypnosis and what is trance?

Asian Temple

Hypnosis involves going into trance, when the mind focusses on a single idea.

Trance is a perfectly natural state of mind and we go into trance several times a day, such as when we go for walk or a run, driving, watching television or reading a book.

In a therapeutic setting, trance allows us to access subconscious thought patterns and behaviours to help resolve issues that we might otherwise find tricky to resolve.

Trance also gives us a deep state of relaxation, which is even more effective when used with a solution focused awareness, allowing us to develop new insights and understanding about ourselves as we are guided and supported by our hypnotherapist.

What Will I Feel When I Go into Trance during Hypnotherapy

When you have naturally experienced trance before, it may well be when you were driving, running, or on that train journey. We use hypnotherapy to help focus the mind in that trance state, rather than just drifting into trance naturally.

During hypnotherapy, trance also helps us feel very calm and relaxed, but we remain aware of everything around us. It feels very pleasant and is similar to daydreaming.

Most people find it an extremely pleasant and enjoyable state and some of our clients find it so relaxing that they have a regular session just to relax and de-stress.

Trance is perfectly safe and you are in control at all times. A Hypnotherapist cannot make a person do anything they do not want to or that they morally object to. Just as it is easy to come out of a natural trance, you can leave the state whenever you wish – you cannot get stuck in hypnosis.

Who Uses Hypnotherapy

Our clients are a real mix of people from all walks of life, with a large range of different needs. it really depends on what each client wants and needs from the sessions.

Many people have successfully used hypnotherapy to give up smoking.

For others, it might be to help tackle a fear of spiders, heights or of flying.

Or, it may be regular relaxation and de-stressing sessions to keep those stress levels lower. One client found it particularly helpful ahead of going into hospital for an operation – but it could just as easily be to help with going to the dentist.

Athletes and sportspeople use hypnotherapy to help them focus and overcome particular blocks. It could be a boxer using hypnotherapy to help practice their technique or a golfer looking to improve their swing.

In business, it can help with important events, such as presentations, public speaking or interviews.
